2. Do you find yourself saying the wrong things?
3. Are you easily distracted?
4. Do you find yourself unable to control your emotions?
5. Are you easily forgetting things?
If you answered yes to all of the above, you may be severely stressed! Let’s look at the past week for one woman as an example of how stress can affect your life, and what you can do about it.
Are you clumsier than normal?
During the course of a week, she dropped her phone multiple times (including twice in the same meeting), tripped over chair legs, almost missed sitting in her chair, and walked into a wall. While she’s not the most graceful person in the world, these ‘klutz’ moments were more than during an average week.
Do you find yourself saying the wrong things?
On several occasions, she said one thing meaning another. She replaced “tomorrow” with “Tuesday,” and repeatedly switched work terms, creating much confusion for her colleagues and extra work to clarify everything.
Are you easily distracted?
After back-to-back-to-back meetings, she unfortunately left late and caught the next train home. While writing an e-mail on the train, she realized the train stopped and suddenly jumped up with all her belongings to get off the train, only to realize, standing on the platform, that she was at the wrong station. After a split second debating whether to stay at the wrong station, she jumped back on the train, and made her way back to her seat. She politely asked her fellow passengers not to look at her because of her embarrassment; they tried to comfort her and then obliged.
Do you find yourself unable to control your emotions?
A man was trying to convey the seriousness of an issue with a fire illustration. A bird, after flying between two electric poles, caught on fire and crashed into a building which then also caught on fire. She tried very very hard not to laugh or smile during this public meeting, but with each retelling, she would break down in tears, laughing, unable to complete her story.
Are you easily forgetting things?
There were things that happened during the week where she forgot something, or maybe forgot to do something, but she cannot recall. Oh wait, she had a mini-heat stroke, became disoriented and almost fainted… But that might have been the week before…
So what now?
Stress can have serious long-term effects on your health, and should be reduced as much as possible. Things you can try in the short term include getting enough sleep, and trying to relieve stress by exercising, laughing and/or spending time in nature.
Just be careful when you’re crossing streams so as not to fall in.
